A very Frenchy hat The
Since 1946, Crambes has been manufacturing hats for the major companies in Caussade, in the Tarn-et-Garonne region. Thanks to its know-how, which is now a Living Heritage Company, the company produces more than 300,000 pieces per year. Auguste Crambes, the grandfather, invented the hat made of canvas.
The history of the hatter
Auguste Crambes, then a worker in the middle of the felt hat, decided to set up his own business. He settles in a “cellar” and makes his headwear with 2 or 3 “pedals” (machines allowing the forming of hats). When he arrived in Caussade, the city of hats, in Occitania, he bought a workshop to make felt hats. One morning, he has a frankly good idea. He glued cork on pieces of fabric, which he then shaped: this was the beginning of the hats made of canvas!
Today, Crambes is still managed by the founder’s grandson, Thierry Fresquet, who perpetuates this know-how. Catherine Vampouille and Benoît Besnault, the future buyers, intend to rely on these skills to give the company a boost.
