Garment longevity has recently gained considerable attention in the textile industry due to its importance in circularity. Acrylic fibers are known to improve the durability of garments due to their high color retention and dimensional stability.

Traditionally, acrylic fibres are dyed with cationic dyes, while cellulosic fibres are dyed with reactive dyes. Dyeing of fibre blends with different dyeing methods usually requires sequential dyeing, while acrylic/cellulosic blends need to be dyed sequentially with reactive and cationic dyes.

Aksa has launched its new breakthrough fibre ‘OnceDye’. The new patented product, which is set to transform the textile industry, is a sustainability-oriented acrylic fibre. It provides the durability and comfort of acrylic fibers without entering the complex stages of dyeing.

OnceDye Fiber introduces sustainability in dyeing processes

Aksa Akrilik has launched the first synthetic fiber in the world that can be dyed with reactive dyes with a goal to reduce the environmental impact of its fibers in later stages of the textile chain. This fiber, called OnceDye, can be dyed along with cotton and cellulosic fibers in a single dyeing process. Acryluna OnceDye allows for saving in terms of processing time, energy and water in comparison to other natural and synthetic blends which require additional dye baths and chemicals since it can by dyed with reactive dyes.

The result is long-lasting and comfortable garments produced with less intensive finishing treatments which, in turn, reduces environmental impact.

Innovative steps to reduce carbon footprint

Acryluna OnceDye reduces carbon and water footprint of dyeing process for acrylic-cellulosic blends by up to 20 per cent as it makes a reduction in chemical diversity, energy and water consumption. By reducing the dyeing time by 25 per cent, it increases the capacity of dyeing plants to a significant extent while providing a remarkable increase of up to 25 per cent in manufacturing capacity compared to other natural and synthetic blends.

OnceDye fibre has a wide range of applications making it perfect for casual, sports, business and work wear. It is currently available as a staple fibre, making it suitable for circular knit, woven and flat knit fabrics.
